Sweet Pea Snapshots

Evening all! Can I offer you a cup of tea? My lovely aunt came into possession of the most delightful Royal Winton tea set in Sweet Pea and very kindly gifted it to me. It is positively divine and I love every sip from it. I have a feeling that you will be seeing these pop up frequently from now on!

The weather has been up and down this week. Beautiful sunshine, some much needed rain and a few grey, chilly mornings which have allowed us to wrap ourselves in the cosy blankets around the place. It makes me so happy to see them being put to good use.

Even my Summer Garden Granny Throw was put to work as an impromptu picnic blanket.

There has been a pleasing amount of crochet happening here at the moment. My South Bay Shawlette is coming along slowly but surely (the pattern can be found on Ravelry). The yarn is Drops Baby Alpaca Silk and is a dream to work with.

Don’t you just love a bit of al fresco hooky? My Crochet Mood Blanket 2014 has become a 2015 mood blanket but I am loving choosing which colour it is to be each day.

However the most exciting news of this week has to be from Little Lady. Drumroll please…my little poppet is now eating!

Yes, weaning take 2 has begun. I cannot believe how well she has taken to eating. She is even giving her brother a run for his money! So far she has scoffed banana, pear, orange, potatoes in all forms, carrots, swede, brocolli, peppers, tomatoes, Weetabix, Rice Crispies, turkey with five spice and ginger, steak, chicken curry, oxtail stew, red rice with feta, cheese sandwich, crumpets and probably loads more that I am forgetting. Here she is enjoying a pitta stick with cashew butter.

I cannot tell you how exciting I am finding this second journey into Baby Led Weaning (not least the improvement that we have seen in the length of time that she will go between feeds in the night now!). I will try to restrain myself from boring you with details of every meal time but please allow me this proud mommy moment as I leave you with one more picture.
See you soon!

Recipe Resolution

Aw, see my Little Man there? So cute and boy does he have personality! Such a cheeky monkey. Does he know that he should not be eating the plant? Yes. Does it stop him scuttling over there the moment he is put down? Oh no. Big smile and a proud giggle – “Look mommy, I got it again!”

Please note that he is also sporting his first ever pair of shoes (proud mommy moment!). As he is increasingly mobile and standing at every opportunity I thought it was about time that he got some big boy footwear. Bless.

Now I am not a great fan of New Year’s Resolutions but January is naturally a month of reflection. So, after a bit of thought, I resolved that this year I would shake up my weekly menus. Instead of just reading recipes and then cooking the same meals I would actually make some new dishes.

Here are a few I have tried so far:

Duck Salad from Jamie’s 30 Minute Meals. I used duck legs, not breast, and served them with my favourite garlic toast but it still worked well and the dressings were delicious! Chinese five-spice is a new jar in my pantry but I loved it.

If you fancy having a go, watch the original programme here or see my synopsis of the recipe below.

Duck (serves 4)
Score the skin of 4 pieces of duck and season with salt, dried thyme and Chinese five-spice. Rub all over with a drizzle of oil.

Place in a large hot frying pan and press down with the lid of a smaller pan. Keep the lid on and cook for 16 – 18 mins (duck breast) and 20 – 25 mins (duck legs) turning regularly.

Before serving, dress with some chilli, mint, honey, juice of 1/2 a lemon and oil. Season to taste.

Jamie suggets lamb’s lettuce, pomegranate, radishes and carrots peeled into strips.

For the dressing, mix olive oil, balsalmic vinegar and juice of 1/2 a lemon then season to taste. I used orange juice in the salad instead of lemon, which was sweeter.

It was our turn to host Sunday dinner for the family and we made Spaghetti with Apples as seen on Rufus’s Food Guide. Cheap, different and delicious this recipe is going to become a regular in our household. To keep the crowds happy we served it with pork, apple and thyme meatballs, which were delicious and went well with the sauce.

The Little Man particularly enjoyed this dish.

Not being a fan of spaghetti (he does not seem to recognise it as food and unceremoniously dumps it off his tray) his sauce was served with these adorable Farfalline – mini pasta bows.

Finally, dessert. This was Orange One-Egg Cake from Lillian’s Cupboard.

Lillian’s blog is wonderfully written and full of mouth-watering recipes, beautiful quilting and interesting stories so pop over and have a look here.

This cake turned out to be light, zesty and very different to an everyday sponge. The frosting was particularly tasty – light, sweet and fluffy.

As well as making a wonderful dessert, this cake also happens to be an excellent accompaniment to a bit of evening hooky. Perfect!

Hope this inspires you to try something new for dinner this week! 🙂

Smiley Snapshots

I would like to share a few random pictures from the last week that are currently making me smile.

19:32 Wednesday –

Indulging in a little blanket love whilst attempting to photograph my ripple. I love the sense of achievement and enjoyment that crochet has brought into my life. Not only the therapeutic relaxation of physically hooking but the whole crafty world that I have discovered online. The colourful, pretty, yarn infested realm of blogs and Flickr and Ravelry – I can’t imagine not being part of it now.

On the left you can spy my Summer Garden Throw that I blogged about last June. I fell out of love with this blanket for a long time and dreaded the thought of carrying on. However, I recently rediscovered it and am head-over-heels all over again and itching to get on with it. Unfortunately this blanket requires quite a lot of concentration to keep track of the colours, which is not easy to do whilst watching/chatting with/singing to a little one so it is not coming on as quickly as I would like. I’m in it for the long haul though and, one day, it will be complete!

19:58 Thursday –

The final instalment in my current ‘Red Sky at Night, Shepherds’ Delight’ trilogy. As you will all know, watching the light change over the lake is quite an obsession of mine and I have particularly enjoyed watching the pinky/orangey displays lately.

13:36 Friday –

Ah, washing drying merrily under the sapphire blue skies. Sigh. What a sight. Makes my heart light and happy. The weather last week was superb and I really enjoyed it. It made me so happy to step outside and feel the warmth on my face, or even sit inside and watch the emerald-green leaves rippling in the sun. Unfortunately it has now turned and today I had the irritating task of re-hanging my washing indoors when it started raining (BBC weather – you lie!).

 12:45 Sunday –

The little man’s first proper taste of non-milky food. He feasted on toast fingers and cooked apple and he Loved It! I just cannot stop looking at these pictures, they make my heart swell. My little baby is now feeding himself. Aw. I was all ready to demonstrate with some exaggerated actions but he knew exactly what to do! From the moment the plate was placed on the floor he was in there. So cute!

15:04 Tuesday –

This was the scene that greeted me as I looked down from my cuppa yesterday afternoon. I had placed the bubba down in order to drink my tea without fear of it being wrestled out of my hands but may need to reassess the safe zone as he is getting more mobile. He does show great enthusiasm for yarn, so soft and colourful and fun to unravel. Clearly his mother’s son!

18:45 Today –

This stripey little number is a new addition to our bathroom and is currently causing me to squeal with excitement whenever I encounter it. So soft, so stripey, so super-dooper! In fact, on Saturday we acquired a whole host of stripey numbers to adorn our newly refurbished bathing area and I love them all. What is more, they were purchased using gift vouchers so were, to all intents and purpose, free (or at least that is what I am telling myself). Brilliant!
